### Summary

Homo neanderthalensis is an extinct species of archaic human that inhabited Eurasia from approximately 400,000 to 40,000 years ago, known for their robust build, large brains, and sophisticated Mousterian tool culture.

### Description

## Homo neanderthalensis
Homo neanderthalensis was a robust species of archaic human that inhabited a vast geographical range across Eurasia, from Western Europe to Central and Southern Siberia. They thrived during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, from approximately 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. Their anatomy was adapted to cold climates, featuring a short, stocky build, a broad chest, and powerful limbs. Cranially, they are distinguished by a long, low skull with a large cranial capacity, averaging around 1500 cc, which is larger than the average for modern humans. Other defining features include a prominent double-arched brow ridge, a large nasal aperture, and a distinctive projection at the back of the skull known as an occipital bun.

Neanderthals exhibited complex behaviors and a sophisticated culture. They were skilled hunters of large game, such as mammoths, bison, and reindeer, and developed the Mousterian stone tool industry, characterized by prepared-core techniques like the Levallois method. There is strong evidence for their controlled use of fire for warmth, cooking, and protection. Furthermore, archaeological findings suggest symbolic or ritualistic behaviors, including the intentional burial of their dead and the use of pigments and personal ornaments like eagle talons. Genetic evidence confirms interbreeding with anatomically modern humans, with non-African modern populations inheriting 1-4% of their DNA from Neanderthals. Their extinction remains a topic of debate, with leading theories pointing to climate instability and competitive pressure from incoming Homo sapiens.
